Songs & Smiles Group Leader (freelance role)

Change lives through music, fun and friendship!

Pay: £35 per session (including prep and pack-up time)
Hours: Between 3-5 sessions per week, depending on your availability
Job type: Freelance contract
Location: Care homes in London; we’ll aim to match you with venues as close to your preferred location as possible

the role

Looking for a part-time role that’s fun, rewarding and makes a huge difference to people’s lives?
Do you love music and getting to know different groups of people?
Are you confident, warm and outgoing, with a knack for making people feel welcome?

Then we’d love to hear from you!

Songs & Smiles is a weekly music & social group for 0-4 year olds, their parents/guardians and older people living in care homes and sheltered housing. We sing, move, play, make friends and have lots of fun.

The hour-long weekly sessions bring joy to everyone involved, help reduce loneliness in older people and new parents and give young children a valuable opportunity to benefit from the company of different generations.

Songs & Smiles is run by The Together Project, a national non-profit that brings local communities together through inter-age activities.

Our sessions are expert-designed to bring benefits to the youngest through to the oldest members of the group. From action songs and percussion instruments to coloured scarves and bubbles, the activities help develop cognitive, motor and communication skills…whilst making everyone smile!

The sessions are divided into two parts. First is the music section, lasting 30-40 minutes. Then it’s Meet & Mingle time, where everyone gets the chance to make friends over refreshments.

The Group Leader’s role is two-fold. You’re there to lead the music section, using the session plans, music and equipment provided. You’re also there to create a warm, inclusive environment that people want to return to time and time again.

There are some additional duties as well, such as maintaining the equipment, requesting new supplies, sending the class register to HQ and so forth.

Songs & Smiles is looking for new leaders to work at sessions across a number of venues in London. Our immediate focus is Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham, however we will be expanding more widely across the rest of the city so are interested to hear from candidates in other areas too. The first recruits will start in September/October 2019 (with training prior), with further positions opening later in the year and throughout 2020.

Pay is £35 per session (one hour plus a small amount of preparation and pack-down time) once training is successfully completed. Sessions run Monday-Friday in the morning (generally a 10.30 or 11am start time) and you will be allocated between 3-5 sessions per week, depending on your preference and our session availability.

This is a part-time, freelance position with guaranteed hours each week. You are responsible for organising and financing your own travel to each session.

  • A friendly, warm and welcoming personality

  • Confident to lead singing and activities in front of large groups and encourage participation

  • Interested in a role that involves working with both young children and older people, many of whom have specialist needs or conditions such as dementia

  • Organised, punctual and reliable

  • A passion for a role that aids social integration and improves wellbeing

  • Experience of working or volunteering with children and/or older adults

  • Experience of leading activities or classes

Selection process:

Step 1: Submit an application form along with a 1 minute video explaining why you are applying and what you think you could bring to the role. It’s about the content not the quality – filmed in selfie-mode on your mobile is fine! Don’t worry about making it look professional, we’re just interested to learn a little bit about you.

Step 2: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to take part in a phone/video call to discuss the role further.

Step 3: Join us at a Songs & Smiles session to get a feel for how it runs and what will be expected of you. You will be provided with a handbook, a session plan and accompanying backing tracks.

Step 4: Audition – this will take place at another Songs & Smiles session. You will be given a section of the session to lead, which you will have practiced in advance.

Step 5: Final decision as to whether you have been successful.
